Young Frankenstein is the story of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder), a neurosurgeon and respected lecturing physician at an American medical school.  Although respected, people always inquire and ridicule him as the relative of a mad scientist and he went so far as to change the pronunciation of his last name and insists his surname is pronounced “Fronkonschteen”.

Frederick learns of the death of his great-grandfather, Baron Beaufort von Frankenstein and is notified that he inherited his infamous estate in Transylvania and travels to Europe to inspect the property.  At the Transylvania train station, he is met by a hunchback, bug-eyed servant named Igor (Marty Feldman), and a pretty young assistant, Inga (Teri Garr) and they escort Dr. Frankenstein to the castle where he meets the old housekeeper named Frau Blucher (Cloris Leachman).

Soon after, he discovers a secret entrance to his grandfather’s laboratory and begins reading his private journals.  Ideas he thought were ludicrous now made sense and he sets out to re-create his grandfathers work and re-animate a dead human body.  With the help of Igor, they go to a graveyard and exhume a fresh grave and bring the body back to the laboratory.  Igor is then charged with procuring a brain and is given specific instructions to bring back the brain of a brilliant scientist.  When it the lab, Igor accidentally knocks over a large jar containing the scientists brain and instead takes the one next to it on the shelf with a sign saying Abnormal on it.

After multiple attempts to re-animate the body during a gigantic lightning storm, the Doctor and his assistants have given up hope when they hear noises coming from the lab.  Everyone rushes down to the lab and the monster is awake and they help him get up and upon the sight of fire, goes crazy and has to be sedated.  Dr. Frankenstein then asks Igor about the brain and he confesses he broke the scientists brain and grabbed one with the name Abby… Abby Normal.  After he creates his own monster (Peter Boyle), new complications ensue with arrival of the doctor’s socialite fiancee Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn).
