Movie Quotes

“Criminal lawyers see bad people at their best, divorce lawyers see good people at their worst.” – Ted
“The dead part wasn’t dead, it was just in a coma. And it was better than the sex, the talking. Although the sex was also like the talking. You know, everything is like everything in a relationship. Don’t you find that? And, um, so we spent the whole night and the next day together, and I just never left. Yes, to be honest, all the problems were there in the beginning too. But I just went along with him and his life because it felt so damn good to feel myself alive.” – Nicole

“I cried four times.” – Henry Barber
“Me too. I wonder if it was the same four.” – Charlie

“Getting divorced with a kid is one of the hardest things to do. It’s like a death without a body.” – Bert Spitz

Big Fish is the story of the incredible life of Edward Bloom (Albert Finney), a charismatic story teller and his estranged son Will (Billy Crudup) who is an international journalist. Will gets news from his mother Sandra (Jessica Lange) that his father is stricken with cancer and the doctors have decided to discontinue chemotherapy treatments. She tells him that he should return to see him one last time before he passes.

Upon hearing the news, Will and his wife Josephine (Marion Cotillard), a French freelance photojournalist who is pregnant with their first child, leave their Paris home to return to Will’s hometown of Ashton, Alabama. Will has not spoken to his father since his wedding where he married Josephine 3 years ago. Will’s issue with his father is the fanciful tales Edward has told of his life, throughout his life, not only to Will but the whole world.

With a child on the way, Will doesn’t want to be the kind of father Edward was to him. Edward was a traveling salesman and largely absent. As a result, Will believes his father to be a liar that never really cared for his family. Now, sitting at his fathers bedside, Will begs him father to be himself. He so dearly wants to figure out who he really was. He wants to finally separate the fact from fiction in all of his stories. His father tells Will that he has been nothing but himself since the day he was born, and if he can’t see that, it is his fault and not Edward’s.

Meanwhile, his father suffers a stroke and is no longer able to tell stories. He is able to ask to tell him a story of how his life ends. Deciding to play along, Will tells his own impromptu tall tale. His father regains some strength and Will tells him that they escape from the hospital and jump into Edwards old car and they speed to a nearby river, where all their friends and family are waiting. Instead of a funeral, they are holding a goodbye party, and Edward happily bids them farewell as he transforms into a catfish and swims away. Shortly afterwords, Edward passes. Will is the only one present when his father dies and is deeply happy they connected at last.

At Edward’s funeral, Will, Josephine, Sandra and Edward’s doctor are the only ones in attendance. Then a long line of cars, vans and buses arrive and it is here that Will becomes astonished to see all of the characters from Edward’s stories show up to pay their respects to Edward. However, each of them is slightly less fantastical than they’re described in Edward’s stories. It finally becomes clear that Edward had combined his love for storytelling with his own reality, which finally made sense to Will. When his own son is born, Will passes the stories on to him, remarking that his father became his stories allowing him to live forever.

“It was that night I discovered that most things you consider evil or wicked are simply lonely, and lackin’ in the social niceties.” – Ed Bloom (Young)

“In tellin’ the story of my father’s life, it’s impossible to separate fact from fiction, the man from the myth. The best I can do is tell it the way he told me. It doesn’t always make sense and most of it never happened… but that’s what kind of story this is.” – William Bloom

“They say when you meet the love of your life, time stops, and that’s true. What they don’t tell you is that when it starts again, it moves extra fast to catch up.” – Ed Bloom (Senior)

Carl turns to Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughey), an untested struggling attorney to defend him against murder charges. In the meantime, the Ku Klux Klan, at the prompting of one of the rapists brothers, plants burning crosses  on Jake’s lawn, attempts to bomb his house and takes a shot at him because he is defending a black man who killed two white men, a not so popular position with some of the locals.

Welcome to Marwen follows the true story of Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell), a man struggling with PTSD who, after being physically assaulted, meticulously creates a miniature model of a fictional Belgian town he calls Marwen to help him ease his trauma. No one expects Hogencamp to recover from a brutal attack from five neo-Nazis that nearly killed him and wiped away all of his memories.

Prior to the attack, Mark was a talented World War II illustrator but is left without the fine motor control to draw any longer. However, Mark is an artist at heart and turns his creative outlet to photography when he starts documenting life in Marwen. His astonishing art installation soon comes to life with breathtakingly realistic dolls — replicas of people in his life and a testament to the most powerful women he knows.

Going through scrapbooks allows him to put together pieces from the past and present as he tries to get a sense of what his life was before the beating. He was married to a real-life Wendy (Stephanie von Pfetten) at one point. Another set of photos show him in rehab with Julie (Janelle Monae), an Iraq vet who lost one of her legs. He is visited once a month by his Russian caretaker Anna (Gwendolyn Christie) and she like many people in Mark’s life, knows of Marwen and the fact that one of the dolls is based off of her. Hogencamp has a doll that represents himself and calls him Captain Hogie and he is a World War II fighter pilot.

Mark’s neighbor Nicol (Leslie Mann) comes over to introduce herself and sees Marwen in his yard and he gives her a tour. He shows her all of his dolls and shows her pictures he has taken. Mark explains to Nicol that his models in Marwen are based on people he knows and describes their roles in his life, as well as how “Marwen” is a combination of Mark and Wendy. He later acquires a new doll and names her Nicol and incorporates her into a scenario in which Captain Hogie is taken by the Nazis, and she joins the other women in a rescue mission.

Through his fantasy world, Hogancamp finds the strength to triumph in the real world and eventually face his attackers.

Outbreak is the story of Colonel Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman), a virologist and contagious disease expert with the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Disease, who is sent to investigate an outbreak in Zaire of a lethal and unidentified virus similar to Ebola and Lassa. When he returns he warns his superior officer Brigadier General William Ford (Morgan Freeman) of the lethal nature of the virus and wants to put out an alert. Ford, who had been one of the men who first dealt with the virus twenty-five years earlier in Africa, insists the virus is contained and is unlikely to show up in the U.S.

Meanwhile, what neither man knows is that the host, a Capuchin monkey, has been brought into the U.S. by freighter from Africa and landed in California. Through an under the table bribe, a young man named Jimbo Scott (Patrick Dempsey) arranges to get the monkey, bound for an animal testing lab, out of quarantine in order to sell it. However, his potential buyer rejects the monkey because it is a female and not what he had agreed to purchase. With no buyer and not wanting to get caught, Jimbo released the monkey into the forest and flies back to Boston to meet up with his girlfriend.

Soon after boarding the flight to Boston, Jimbo starts getting sick. After he lands in Boston, he collapses and gets rushed to a Boston hospital in critical condition. The doctors on hand are confounded by how aggressively and fast he got sick and died and report the symptoms and quick mortality to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and news makes it to Colonel Daniels. Daniels wants to look into it further but General Ford denies his request.

In the meantime, so he turns to his ex-wife, Dr. Dr. Robby Keough (Rene Russo), who works for the CDC and also Daniels ex-wife is called in to investigate. Dr. Keough discovers the virus matches up with the disease from Africa. With an extremely aggressive nature, the virus kills very quickly and Colonel Daniels surmises that it has been contained until another outbreak occurs in Cedar Creek, a small town in California. Daniels defies his orders and flies to Cedar Creek and meets up with a team of doctors including his ex-wife Robby, Major Casey Schuler (Kevin Spacey) and Major Salt (Cuba Gooding Jr.).

A quarantine zone is established to stop the virus from spreading and fearing the virus spreading outside of the small town, the Army is called in to manage the situation. The operation is headed up by Ford’s boss, Major General McClintock (Donald Sutherland) who has his own agenda in mind in order to protect the lethal bug in order to still be able to use it as a bio-weapon. McClintock and Ford were stationed together in Africa in 1969 and first encountered the Mutaba virus in a rural village and developed an antidote, making it the perfect weapon. However, the virus in Cedar Creek mutated and is now airborne making the original antidote useless.

Meanwhile, the doctors must fight against the clock to concoct a new antidote to save the town and its residents before the Army attempts to destroy the town with a fuel-air bomb to try and kill the mutated virus before it spreads further and keeping the original Mutaba virus as a viable bio-weapon. Can Colonel Daniel’s and his team save the day?

Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a very successful high profile sports agent who has it all, the biggest clients, the respect of his peers and a beautiful fiance. However, something is missing. Jerry experiences a crisis of conscience and questions his purpose. Coming to terms with what’s wrong with his career, he stays up all night writing down his thoughts and ideas and ends up composing a heartfelt company-wide memo which he refers to as his mission statement. Caught up in the moment, he goes to a Kinkos and makes copies which get distributed company-wide for everyone in his firm. Unfortunately his opinions are not met with the same enthusiasm from his superiors and it gets him fired from the largest sports agency in the United States.

He rushes back to his office and desperate to hang on to the athletes that he represents, Jerry starts calling all of his contacts. Meanwhile, his firm had prepared for this and had every agent start calling Jerry’s clients telling them that he had a breakdown and they would be taking over for him. After a mad flurry, Jerry was able to convince two of his clients to stay with him. Jerry then proceeds to gather his belongings and make his way and stops to ask if anyone at his firm would go with him to start his own sports agency.

The only person from his former firm that would join him when he was fired was Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), an idealistic single mom who sees potential in Jerry. Banking on their sole existing client, volatile Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), Jerry sets out with the impossible task of rebuilding what he once had while starting to fall in love as they struggle to make their business work. Can Jerry resurrect his career while staying true to himself?

I was good in a living room. Send me in there, I’ll do it alone. And now I just… I don’t know… but our little company had a big night tonight. A really big night. But it wasn’t complete, it wasn’t nearly close to being in the same vicinity as complete, because I couldn’t share it with you. I couldn’t hear your voice, or laugh about it with you. I missed my wife. We live in a cynical world, and we work in a business of tough competitors, I love you. You complete me. And I just…” – Jerry Maguire
