Grosse Pointe Blank is the story of Martin Blank (John Cusack), a freelance professional hit man who after years in the business starts to develop a conscience causing him to flub a couple of routine jobs.  As a result of one of his contracts not going down according to plan, Martin is forced to take in Detroit for the same client pro bono.

Marcella (Joan Cusack) is Martin’s office manager and coordinates the administrative aspects of his business.  On a phone call, she mentions to Martin that he received an invitation to his 10 year high school reunion in Grosse Point, a suburb of Detroit.  She jokingly tells him could attend his reunion after he completes his assignment since he will be in town at the same time.

It has been 10 years since Martin had been in Grosse Pointe having left the day of the graduation prom to join the Army.  In the process, he stood up his prom date with Debi Newberry (Minnie Driver), his serious girlfriend at the time.

While in Grosse Pointe, Martin tries to forget about his hit man life and focus most specifically with reconnecting with Debi, who works as a local radio host.  Martin shows up during a live radio broadcast spiking up the tension as the long lost loves see each other for the first time in a decade.  Debi uses her platform to inquire with the listening audience as to whether she should let Martin back into her life.  Making it up to Debi might not be as easy as Martin wants, despite the pair still being attracted to each other.
