Joker is the story of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a party clown, social outsider and aspiring stand-up comedian. It’s 1981 and Arthur lives with his mother Penny (Francis Conroy) and suffers from a medical disorder that causes him to laugh at inappropriate times and he depends on social services for medication for his condition.
Worn down by his job, his life and society in general, Arthur slowly loses access to his medications and then his grip on reality. His dream is to be a stand-up comedian and to earn the notice of his hero, late-night talk show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro). After getting that notice in the form of public ridicule, Arthur finally snaps. Playing himself with makeup, he fully becomes the Joker.
