Youngblood is the story of young hockey phenom Dean Youngblood (Rob Lowe), a 17 year old farmhand in rural New York who dreams about playing professional hockey in the National Hockey League. Dean is an exceptionally skilled young player trying to make a name for himself and tries out with the Hamilton Mustangs, a Canadian Junior Hockey team coached by Murray Chadwick (Ed Lauter). Although Dean’s offensive skills and skating ability impress Coach Chadwick he is concerned that Youngblood lacks the grit and defensive skills necessary to make it in the big league. In one of his first games, Dean gets bullied by the Thunder Bay Bombers enforcer, Carl Racki (George Finn) and his teammate and mentor, Derek Sutton (Patrick Swayze) sticks up for the young player. Racki is a notoriously dirty player and injures Derek with a cheap shot and puts him in the hospital. Dean comes after Racki and lacks the fighting skills to defend himself. Dejected, Dean returns to his childhood home deflated and Dean’s father (Eric Nesterenko) teaches Dean some techniques to toughen him up for a rematch with Racki.
“Where else could I get beaten up every day, treated like shit by prima donna Canadians and get my nuts shaved?” – Dean Youngblood
“I don’t give a shit where I play as long as I go number one in the draft and sign the biggest contract I can. I’ve been busting my ass in this league for four years, and I’m gonna get what’s coming to me.” – Derek Sutton
“Wanna go, pretty boy?” – Carl Racki
“All right, one period left. One period away from winning it all or losing to these miserable hackers with their shit-eating grins and their Saturday night wrestling tactics. One period away from remembering something for the rest of your life or something you wanna forget.” – Murray Chadwick
