Avatar is the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine who is confined to a wheel chair.  Jake has a twin brother who is a research scientist and was recently killed in an attempted robbery.  After the funeral, Jake is approached and gets recruited to take his brother’s place on a unique mission taking place on the distant world of Pandora.  For his cooperation, Jake is promised an expensive spinal surgery to repair his spine and enable him to walk again.  Excited at the prospect of walking again, he readily agrees.  Once his transport arrives on Pandora, he discovers the mission is to infiltrate a native humanoid species on Pandora called the Na’vi.  In order to fit in, the company has developed avatar clones of the Na’vi which can be controlled by the humans through a computer linkage system which might help the much smaller humans fit in better with the native people.

Jake was recruited for the mission because one of the avatar’s was developed specifically to match his brothers DNA and as an identical twin, they have matching DNA and he would therefore be able to control the avatar.  The research project is headed by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and her crew of research technicians who have been on Pandora for some time interacting with the natives using similar avatars.  Meanwhile, the head of security on Pandora is Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and he recognizes the benefit of having a former Marine involved in the mission and works with Jake to gain intelligence on the situation and the native people.

Pandora is home to a rare mineral, unobtanium, that was discovered by an exploratory mining company called the Resources Development Administration (RDA) and they begin mining operations on Pandora to extract the valuable mineral.  In addition, RDA has secured military protection to ensure the success of the operation.  After establishing control of his Avatar, Jake interacts with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) when she saves him from certain death.  Jake accompany’s her back to her village and her father is the Chief and tells her to teach Jake their ways so they could each better understand one another. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe, he quickly falls in love with Neytiri.  Meanwhile, Jake learns of plans for the company to start mining in the epicenter of life on the planet called Home Tree and after having gotten to know the tribe, he fights back against his mission and battles the humans for the fate of Pandora.
