Quigley Down Under is the story of Matthew Quigley (Tom Selleck), an American cowboy and rifleman from Wyoming who travels to the Australian outback to answer a help wanted ad calling for a sharpshooter.  When Quigley meets his employer, Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman), a gentleman infatuated with stories of quick-draw gunslingers from the American Old West, he pays Quigley the 50 gold coins they had agreed upon for making the trip.

Following, Marston asks Quigley for a demonstration of his range and accuracy.  Quigley describes his weapon which he modified and demonstrates his ability by shooting a bucket in rapid succession three times at around 1,200 yards.  Impressed by Quigley’s ability, Marston wants him to use his sharpshooting skills to help eradicate the native Indigenous Aborigines.  Quigley finds the idea abhorrent refuses and the two men fight and when Quigley is knocked out, Marston leaves him and a local crazy woman named Cora (Laura San Giocomo) to die in a remote part of the outback.  They are rescued, however, by Aborigines, and plot their revenge against Marston.
