Joy is the story of Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence), an airline booking agent residing in Peconic, New York juggling a complicated family life and struggling financially. Living with Joy and her two children are her single mother, Terri (Virginia Madsen), who spends all day in bed watching soap operas, her maternal grandmother, Mimi (Diane Ladd), and her under-employed ex-husband, Tony (Edgar Ramirez), a wannabe singer who sleeps in the basement.
Amidst the confusion, Joy perseveres and was always fascinated with creating things, a pursuit always supported by Grandma Mimi. Feeling buried by her life, Joy decides to make some changes in her life, and expects the unquestioning practical support of her family. Those changes include manufacturing a new product of her own design. She designs a revolutionary new self-wringing mop and sells it on QVC which leads to all sorts of adventure, good and bad.
