Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the story of Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), a grieving mother who rents three abandoned billboards outside town near her home to bring attention to her daughter Angela’s unsolved rape and murder that occurred seven months earlier.
Angry over the lack of progress in the investigation, Mildred’s statements on the billboards upset the townspeople, including Police Chief Bill Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) and his racist, violent, alcoholic officer Jason Dixon (Sam Rockwell). Despite harassment, threats and her son’s disapproval, Mildred remains determined to keep up her billboards until her daughters murderer is brought to justice.
“What’s the law on what you can and can’t say on a billboard? I assume it’s you can’t say nothing defamatory and you can’t say f#*k, piss or c#*@. That right?” – Mildred Hayes
“Or… anus.” – Red Welby
“I think I’ll be alright then.” – Mildred Hayes
“So, Mildred Hayes, why did you put up these billboards?” – Gabriella Forrester
“My daughter, Angela, was murdered seven months ago along this same stretch of road here. It seems to me the police department is too busy torturing black folks to solve the actual crime.” – Mildred Hayes
“Hey f#*khead!” – Mildred Hayes
“What?” – Officer Jason Dixon
“Don’t say what, Dixon, when she comes in calling you a f#*khead.” – Desk Sergeant
“I’d do anything to catch your daughter’s killer. I don’t think them billboards is very fair.” – Bill Willoughby
