Stranger Than Fiction is the story of Harold Crick (Will Ferrell), an agent for the Internal Revenue Service who is assigned to audit an intentionally tax-delinquent baker, Ana Pasqual (Maggie Gyllenhaal), to whom he is attracted.  On the same day, he begins hearing a onmiscent disembodied voice narrating his life as it is happening. He tries but Harold is unable to communicate with the voice.  On his way to work, Harold’s watch suddenly stops and he resets it using the time given by a bystander; the voice narrates, “little did he know that simple, seemingly innocuous act would result in his imminent death”.  Worried by this prediction, Harold consults a psychiatrist who attributes the voice to schizophrenia, though they consider that if there really was a narrator, he should visit an expert in literature and Harold visits Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman) and relates his story.  When Professor Hilbert recognizes aspects of a literary work in Harold’s story, he helps Harold identify the author.  First they needed to determine if it was a comedy or a tragedy.  After falsely determining his life was a tragedy, Harold decides it is actually a comedy and the Professor helps him identify the author as Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson) when Harold hears her voice in an interview on TV.  Professor Hilbert is a fan of her work and reveals to Harold that all of her books feature the tragic death of her main character.  Harold must find her before she finishes her story.
