The Mexican is the story of Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt) a low-level Mafia ‘mechanic’ whose ineptitude is countered by frequent but unpredictable bouts of dumb luck.  Jerry is put in a position where he not only has to save his own skin, but that of his girlfriend.  Jerry is ordered to go to Mexico to retrieve a one of a kind and very valuable antique gun called The Mexican, which is believe dot carry a curse.  Jerry needs to find the gun and transport it back across the border into the United States.  Five years earlier, Jerry had caused a traffic accident in which he hit the car of local mobster Arnold Margolese (Gene Hackman), who was then jailed for five years after the police searched his car following the crash, finding someone tied up in his trunk.  In compensation for his jail time, Jerry has been working for Margolese and has been sent on various errands by his second in command, Bernie Nayman (Bob Balaban).  Retrieving the gun will be Jerry’s final errand.  Meanwhile, his girlfriend Samantha Barzel (Julia Roberts) has decided to leave Jerry prior to his trip to Mexico over his lack of commitment to their relationship.
