Flatliners is the story of five Chicago medical students, Nelson (Kiefer Sutherland), Rachel (Julia Roberts), David (Kevin Bacon), Joe (Stephen Baldwin) and Steckle (Oliver Platt) who are obsessively fascinated by the mystery of death. Wanting to know what lies beyond the visible world, they decide to experiment with ‘near death’ experiences on themselves, until the dark consequences of past tragedies begin to jeopardize their lives.

Seeking answers about the afterlife, Nelson persuades his fellow pupils to help him end his life, and then resuscitate him in the nick of time. David, Joe and Rachel also journeyed into the unknown, looking for meaning in their own lives. Under their temporary deaths they each experience strange visions, and memories long since forgotten. Shortly after being revived, they all begin having flashes of walking nightmares from their childhood, reflecting sins they committed or had committed against them.

As the experiments become more perilous, each is forced to contend with the paranormal consequences of piercing the veil of life and death by trespassing on the other side. The experiences continue to intensify, and they begin to be physically beaten by their visions as they try and go deeper into the death experience to find a cure.

Movie Quotes

“Philosophy failed. Religion failed. Now it’s up to the physical sciences.” – Nelson Wright
“When my body temperature hits 86 degrees, you’re going to hit me with 200 Joules. The electric current will stop my heart. When the heart is dead, take the mask off… I’m going to draw 200 ccs. You handle the injections. When the EEG flat-lines, the brain is dead. I’ll be exploring. Give me 30 seconds. Flip the blanket on to ‘warm.’ Take me up to 93 degrees slowly. Inject 1 cc of Adrenaline, and at one minute, Joe, you come in with the defibs. And you bring me back to life.” – Nelson Wright
“With brain damage. Resembling in many ways a cabbage patch doll.” – Rachel Mannus

“Somehow we’ve brought our sins back physically. And they’re pissed.” – Nelson Wright

“Good thing I didn’t flatline. My 350-pound babysitter would be chasing me for the half-eaten pastrami sandwiches I stole from her.” – Randy Steckle
