Apollo 13 is based on the actual events of NASA’s 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission which was to be America’s third trip to land on the Moon. Astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) find everything going smoothly and according to the plan after leaving Earth’s orbit.
However, when an oxygen tank explodes and cripples the spacecraft, the scheduled moon landing mission is scrubbed and turns into a rescue mission with the crew orbiting the moon while NASA devises a strategy to return the astronauts back home. Subsequent tensions within the crew and numerous technical problems threaten both the astronauts’ survival but their safe return to Earth.
A mission that couldn’t get TV airtime because space flights had become so routine to the American public suddenly grabbed the national spotlight. This is a tale of averted tragedy, heroism and is a testament to the creativity and dedication of the scientists who ran the early space missions.
“Houston, we have a problem.” – Jim Lovell
“We have never lost an American in space, and we’re sure not gonna lose one on my watch. Failure is not an option.” – Gene Kranz
“So long, Earth. Catch you on the flip side.” – Jack Swigert
“I sometimes catch myself looking up at the Moon, remembering the changes of fortune in our long voyage, thinking of the thousands of people who worked to bring the three of us home. I look up at the Moon and wonder, when will we be going back, and who will that be?” – Jim Lovell
