Serendipity is the story of Jonathan Trager (John Cusack), a television producer for ESPN who meets Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) during the Christmas season in New York City at Bloomingdale’s when they both tried to purchase the same pair of black cashmere gloves.  Although they are both currently in relationships, a mutual attraction leads them to share a desert at Serendipity 3.  Jonathan thinks it is love at first sight and wants to explore things further but Sara doesn’t ascribe to that and isn’t sure it is meant to be.  So they decide to test fate by splitting up and seeing if destiny would bring them back together.  To give themselves a chance, Jonathan writes his name and number on a $5 bill and Sara makes him spend it and then tells him she is going to write hers in a used copy of the book ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’.  Thus if either if that bill makes it back to her or the book finds Jonathan, then it was truly meant to be.

Many years later, having lost each other that night, both are engaged to be married yet neither can shake the need to give fate one last chance to reunite them.  Jonathan enlists the help of his best man Dean Kansky (Jeremy Piven) to track down the girl he can’t forget.  At the same time Sara flies from California to New York with her best friend Eve (Molly Shannon) in hopes destiny would bring her soulmate back to her.  Near-misses and classic Shakespearean confusion bring the two close to meeting a number of times but fate will have the final work on weather it was meant to be.
