Richard Jewell is the story of Richard Allensworth Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser), an American police officer who, while working as a security guard for AT&T, became known in connection with the Centennial Olympic Park bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

On July 27, 1996, while on security patrol, Richard shoos off some drunken kids from the side of a building and spots an unattended backpack in Atlanta’s Centennial Park, where the Olympic’s nightly concerts are held. He alerts police on scene and they figure someone had just left a backpack full of beer or snacks for the kids. With so many visitors in Atlanta for the Olympics, some are bound to leave their belongings behind. To think it’s a bomb? That’s just crazy the cops say. Richard retorts, “I’d rather be crazy than wrong right now.”

Turns out, he’s not crazy…and he’s not wrong. The experts find three massive pipe bombs in the backpack. Minutes later, they explode killing two people with more than 100 people getting injured. The whole situation could have been much worse had it not been for Richard Jewell. For three days, the security guard is lauded as a national hero. But soon, the FBI begins to wonder if he really is the hero and Agents Tom Shaw (Jon Hamm) and Dan Bennett (Ian Gomez) are determined to find out. Shaw and Bennett are not the only ones looking for a bomber. Kathy Scruggs (Olivia Wilde), a bulldog reporter for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution is also and she will do whatever it takes to get her scoop.

Movie Quotes

“Is accusers are two of the most powerful forces in the world…the United States government and the media.” – Watson Bryant
“You always look at the guy who found the bomb, just like you always look at the guy who found the body.” – Tom Shaw

“I did my job that night and people are alive because of that.” – Richard Jewell

“The media has portrayed my son as the person who has committed this crime. They have taken all privacy away from us. They have taken all peace. The FBI follows his every move and watches my home constantly. And why? My son is innocent. Mr. President, please clear my son’s name.” – Bobi Jewell
