In Time is a futuristic story set in 2169 where people are genetically engineered to stop aging on their 25th birthday. On their 25th birthday, an implanted clock begins a 1-year countdown and when the clock reaches zero, the person ‘times out’ and dies instantly. Time has thus become the universal currency.
Will Salas (Justin Timberlake) is a factory worker in Dayton, Ohio, one of the poorest time zones in Ohio. At the other end of the spectrum is New Greenwich which is the richest time zones in the country. Dayton is a manufacturing ghetto where people rarely have more than 24 hours on their clocks while in New Greenwich, people have enough time to be essentially immortal.
One night after work, Will sees a group of time-robbing thugs led by Fortis going after a drunken man named Henry Hamilton (Matt Bomer) and saves him. Hamilton has 116 years on his clock, but is tired of living and made his way to the ghetto to end his life. Will lets Hamilton stay with him overnight so that he will be safe to travel back to New Greenwich. On a mission, Hamilton transfers his time to a sleeping Will Salas, then times out. Raymond Leon (Cillian Murphy), is a Timekeeper who acts in the capacity of the time police, considers Will a primary suspect in Hamilton’s death and begins searching for Hamilton’s missing time.
With more than enough time to escape Dayton and make his way to New Greenwich, Will waits at the bus stop for his mother Rachel (Olivia Wilde) to arrive so he can take her out of the ghetto and give her a life she deserves. When the bust arrives, his mother is not aboard. The fare had increased from 1 to 2 hours and she did not have enough on her clock to board. She begins running and once Will realizes she is not there, he begins running in her direction and they see each other but as they reach each other, her clock times out and she dies in his arms.
Will immediately leaves and heads to New Greenwich. Salas visits a casino and meets time-loaning businessman Philippe Weis (Vincent Kartheiser) and his daughter Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried) while playing poker. Will comes dangerously close to timing out but eventually wins more than a millennium in a flawless poker hand. Weiss invites Will to a party at his house to give him an opportunity to win back his time. Meanwhile, Raymond Leon is hot on his trail and arrests Will at the party and confiscates almost all of his time.
Will manages to escape and takes Sylvia as a hostage. Will calls her father to demand a 1,000 ransom to be paid into the time mission for the desperate. When Weiss refuses, they decide to rob her father’s vault and steal 1,000,000 years to give to the people. As fugitives, Raymond Leon and his associates track down Will to arrest him and take back all of the time he has stolen.
