Overboard is the story of Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn), a wealthy snobbish woman living a life of leisure with her husband Grant (Edward Hermann) aboard their yacht.  While docked in Elk Cove, Oregon, Joanna hires a local carpenter named Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell) to build her a custom closet.  Dean builds a beautiful closet with shoe compartments and Joanna is incensed that he used Oak instead of Cedar.  When the two don’t see eye-to-eye, Dean is left unpaid and Joanna dumps both him and his tool box into the water before setting sail.

The following day, Joanna accidentally falls off of the boat and is fished out of the water by a garbage scow skipper and when she regains consciousness realizes she has amnesia and can’t remember who she is or anything about her life.  The local Sheriff posts her face on TV asking if anyone can identify the ‘Jane Doe’ woman and Dean sees her and thinks its an opportunity to recover the money she owes him and plans to have her work off the $600.

Grant takes the opportunity to rid himself of the demanding Joanna while Dean, a widower with four kids arrives at the hospital and claims she is his wife.  The hospital is reluctant to release Joanna to Dean but he mentions a birthmark he saw on her upper thigh when he was building her closet and leaves the hospital with her.  Joanna can’t remember her past identity and Dean manufactures a back story of their life together and gets a free housekeeper and mother for his four kids.
