Biography

Ron Canada began his career as a television news reporter in 1971 and for his work in the nations capital, he received an Emmy Award in 1977. The following year he received an Associated Press Award for Outstanding Reporting.

He began his acting career in 1978 and studied acting at The Folger Theatre Group under the tutelage of Franchelle Stewart Dorn and moved from D.C. to New York in 1985. Canada has had a long career in both television and film and is known primarily for his work in Cinderella Man, Wedding Crashers and his recurring role as Under Secretary of State Ted Barrow on The West Wing. In 1996, Ron received the Dallas Film Critics Award and significant national attention for his performance as ‘Otis Payne’ in John Sayles’s film Lone Star.

Canada has also participated in major stage productions playing the role of Lago in Shakespeare’s Othello as well as his role as Emmet Tate in Zooman and the Sign at New York’s Signature Theatre. He also originated the role of Duncan Troy in Headstrong at The Ensemble Studio Theatre, which earned him an Audelco Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor.

He attended DeWitt Clinton High and graduated from the same Bronx High School that produced actors Burt Lancaster and Stubby Kaye, Directors George Cukor and Gary Marshall, Fashion Designer Ralph Lauren, Comedian Robert Klein, writers James Baldwin and Paddy Chayefsky, Photographer Richard Avedon, Congressman Charles Rangel, and Manhattan Borough President Basil Patterson. Like former NBA great Nate Archibald, Canada is a member of the 1966 class of DeWitt Clinton High.
