Sweet Home Alabama is the story of Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon), a successful up and coming New York fashion designer who gets recently engaged to Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey). She realizes she is still technically married to Jake Perry (Josh Lucas), her estranged husband and hometown sweetheart. Melanie goes back to her little hometown in Alabama to tell her parents she got engaged and to get Jake to sign divorce papers so she can marry Andrew.
