The Irishman is a 1950’s story in the 1950’s about Frank ‘The Irishman‘ Sheeren (Robert De Niro), a truck driver who gets involved with Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and his Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family. As Sheeren climbs the ranks to become a top hit man, he also goes to work for Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), a powerful Teamster tied to organized crime.
In a nursing home in his wheelchair, Frank Sheeren, an elderly World War II veteran, recalls his time as a hit man for a crime syndicate and the hits that defined his mob career. In particular, the part he claims to have played in the disappearance of his life-long friend, Jimmy Hoffa, the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who mysteriously vanished in late July 1975 a the age of 62.
